Workman was a racehorse and the 1939 Grand National Winner, coming in at 100/8 in the colours of millionaire match manufacturer Sir Alexander Maguire. [1] It was ridden by Timmy Hyde and trained by Jack Ruttle out of Hazelhatch Stud. It won by three lengths from Mac Moffat (25/1).
Sired by Cottage, bred by Baron Edouard de Rothschild in France, who went on to sire two more Grand National Winners Lovely Cottage 1946 and Shelia's Cottage in 1948.
Workman's pedigree can be traced back to the great stallion Marco, sire of three Grand National winners, who in turn was sired by the unbeaten Barcaldine.
For trainer Jack Ruttle it was his first English Grand National win after notching up three Irish Grand National winners, Halston in 1920 and 1922 returning for his third in 1934 with Poolgowran.
Tim Hyde also had further success on English Turf when he returned in 1946 to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup on Prince Regent, whose line descends from Marco and Baracaldine. [2]
